How To Sew a Reversible Dog Bandana
SO ... You want to dress up your dog?
Sewn By Nikki - Dog Bandanas |
So ... everyone is getting dressed up for the holidays, a visit to Grandma and Grandpa's or even, just for a walk in the park. Well, let's get your furry friend looking great as well! Here is a super easy tutorial to follow along with. You can do this in under 30 minutes! That includes prep time! Go and grab your materials and follow along. You can choose to watch the video on my channel by clicking the link HERE, or just follow along by reading below.
Grab the following supplies:
1 fat quarter fabric
coordinating thread
scissors
ruler
tailor's chalk
sewing machine, of course.
1. Think about what size dog bandana you will need based upon dog's size. Using this image, draw a pattern using the measurements below.
XS = 10 x 1.5 x 5
S = 12 x 1.5 x 7
M = 14 x 2 x 9
L = 16 x 2 x 10
2. Cut 1 front fabric piece and 1 back fabric piece.
One fabric quarter can be used for both front and back fabric if you want the same pattern.
3. Place fabric pieces together; pretty sides facing each other. (pattern to pattern)
4. Sew across the top of the fabrics, connecting the tops. 1/4 in seam allowance. Be sure to back stitch at the beginning and at the end of your seams.
5. Open the fabric so it faces you like this. Finger press open the seams as it is in front of you. Then, fold over the left and right ends of the fabric, as shown below, 1/4in., to create a clean edge. Sew down the left and the right sides. Backstitch! Be sure to cut off end of threads.
It should look like this picture below.
6. After sewing the left and right edges of the fabric, close the fabric and lay it flat.
Fold the fabric like this so your triangles meet. Flatten everything with your fingers.
Sew the raw edges using a 1/4 in . seam allowance as shown below. Remember to backstitch!
7. Turn your bandana the right way now. Prepare for the last step! You are almost done!
Iron it flat to get out all of the wrinkles from turning it the right way. (Don't iron on top of your cutting mat!)
8. Now let's create the casing for the dog's collar to go through. You will be making a stitch line on top of the pretty side of the fabric. You will see this. Be sure to use a coordinating color, to match with your fabric.
Use a ruler to measure 1 inch from the top of the bandana. Use tailor's chalk to mark from left to right side. (I turned mine vertically here because it was easier for marking purposes.)
Sew, top stitch, down that line to create the casing. Remember to back stitch!
9. That is it! You are done! Slide the collar inside of that casing!
That was a super quick project to do! Use scraps to make more.... dress the doggie up for the holidays. Once you have done a few, you can do this in 10 minutes! No kidding!

these are perfect. The tutorial was so easy to follow. I appreciate the video and instructions. What would the measurements be for an XL dog? I was thinking 18x2x11 or 12 down? Could you let me know your thoughts. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteHello. Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I was out of town for a while! Those measurements sound perfect! The "18" would be the number to be concerned about and I think you did well with that measurement based upon my numbers used. Did you already make it? How did it turn out?
DeleteI am going to try this tonight for my dog! :)
ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteI know this may sound a little dince but could you do a pattern that we can just click on and print?
If you could, i would be sooooooo appreciative.
Tysm!
Hi, thank you so much for the pattern and ideas! I made one this afternoon for my tiny brindle who likes to run in the woods. The orange collar wasn't enough help. The only change I made was to cut on the fold instead of two pieces. I moved the pattern piece up a quarter inch to make up for it. Thanks again.
ReplyDeleteThank you for this easy to follow video and pattern. My girls are going to love their new bandanas.
ReplyDeleteEasy to follow instructions!! Thank you.
ReplyDeleteThank you for showing us all how to make these. I am starting to sew a couple today.
ReplyDeletethank you awesome you did a great job on description of project.Phyllis
ReplyDeleteWhat about for xxl dog 20 x 2 x 14 ?
ReplyDeleteI would consider adding 2 inches for any size greater than XL. I haven't made one for an XXL dog but follow the "pattern" of numbers. That should work.
ReplyDeleteI have been making masks for people to wear places. I have a lot of pieces left I never used! I'm going to put some old school quilting ideas to work & see what I can do! Have you ever tried embellishing them with bows or anything? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteLike the dog carrier and like to make it but can't find the pattern can you help me
