Fun Ideas for Back to School Sewing

Yes, it's only July but.... as the new school year approaches, it's the perfect time to add a personal touch to your child's back-to-school essentials. Here are some sewing projects that will not only make them stand out but also add a touch of handmade love to their everyday items and you can do one, or more, in just a weekend!

1. Personalized Backpacks

Sewing a custom backpack allows you to tailor it to your child's favorite fabrics, colors and themes. It is so noticeable to so many because they wear it like clothing! Consider adding extra pockets for organization.  Personalize it with their name.

2. Lunch Bags and Snack Pouches

Create reusable lunch bags and snack pouches that are not only eco-friendly but also stylish. Choose fun prints and sturdy fabrics that can withstand daily use and spills.  Use food grade lining for both and your items will be easy to clean, safe to eat from and fashionable!

3. Pencil Cases/Ear Bud Cases

A handmade pencil case is a great way to keep school supplies organized. You can experiment with different shapes and sizes (whether flat or boxed bottoms), add pockets and tabs with swivel hooks if you choose. The ear bud case can also double as a coin pouch for lunch money, if needed. Create a set of the different items.

4. Book Covers

Protect textbooks and notebooks with DIY fabric book covers. They can be easily washed and reused throughout the school year, and you can let your creativity shine with colorful designs and patterns. I am sure many youth are using computers in class these days but if they do bring home textbooks, this would be a cool way to keep them well taken care of and show off their interests.

5. Quilted Binder Covers

Give plain binders a makeover with quilted covers. You can use the same style as above for the binders, unless you would like to go the extra mile and quilt it.  Quilting provides extra padding for protection and adds a cozy feel. Include pockets on the inside covers for all of their loose papers that will be returned to them as they're running out the door or notes they'll shove in their binder..... or a pencil holder for added functionality.

6. Hair Accessories

Create hair bows, headbands, or scrunchies that complement their school attire or activities. These accessories are quick to make and can be sewn using scraps of fabric or specialty materials like felt or leather, not just cotton.  Cotton does make it easy to toss in the washer when they're sweaty or dirty however.

7. Art Smocks or Aprons

Keep their clothes clean during home economics' baking class or art class. A personalized art smock or apron can do that. Choose water-resistant fabrics and add pockets for holding brushes, paints, or other creative tools.

8. Cork Wallet

That lunch money and school ID has to go somewhere!  Why not sew an easy billfold wallet - this choice doesn't require any lining so you can pull it together fast. You can also add a coin purse to their backpack as an alternative for bills and coins.

9. Sleepover Bags

Sew a sleepover Tote bag or mini duffel for storing pajamas, toiletries, and a favorite stuffed animal for those exciting overnight stays with friends.
