Sewing Gifts for Christmas

It's the time of the year when you want to find, or make, the perfect gift, instead of just a gift, for that someone special.  Maybe you want to make someone feel loved or simply welcomed into your family. Maybe you want to make your family member smile a little extra by getting something they cannot buy at a store - to make Christmas morning that extra bit of "Hallmark Movie" special.  Laughs, smiles, cries and sounds of joy are my absolute favorite thing to sit back and watch during the holidays!  Buy that unique pattern to represent what they love - to show you have been listening to them talk all year long - and get to sewing!

1. A Neckbone Pillow

Everyone rests, relaxes and kicks back on their sofa, I don't care who they are!  We enjoy a quick snooze or someplace comfy to read books or binge on TV shows.  A comfortable pillow that contours to their neck is impossible not to like!  Learn how to make the neckbone.

2. A Rope Bowl

Keys, loose change, candy... they all need to go someplace, yes?  These rope bowls will be a unique display on a coffee table, end table or entry way table for that special someone. No more scratching of tables with the change or keys if you choose it! This is also so changeable for you to make a wider bowl if you just add additional width on to the base.

3. A Throw Pillow Or a Reading Pillow

Sticking with the sofa idea, a throw pillow or a reading pillow will be a wonderful addition to the personal space. A reading pillow can work for an adult or child and let's face it, it's a great travel accessory to hold a lot of extra somethings in the pocket for a youth. That funny, or sassy phrase can go on a throw pillow if you have the machine for it. With a pillow insert, you can pull these options together in under 30 minutes!  Perfect last minute gift!  Make the Reading Pillow.

4. A Fabric Book Cover

Image a bibliophile's worst nightmare!  OK, but in all seriousness..... one of their biggest goals, is to protect their book covers and pages - by any means necessary!  A book cover is a quick simple, personal, option. You will not go wrong - especially knowing and caring about them caring their book around in their bags while traveling on public transportation.  Learn to make the book cover or consider the next option as well,

5. A Book Sleeve/Tablet Sleeve

What's nice about this option as a book cover, or book sleeve, is that it can double as a table sleeve as well. It's all about the interface you choose to use.  Fusible fleece is a wonderful option but if you know that it will be primarily used for a tablet, go ahead and use a thicker option as interface - such as a foam.  With a pocket in the front,  you'd be amazed at the items you can fit inside that sleeve!  I showed you my picture as proof! It's my favorite airplane accessory... not kidding!  : )  Learn to sew the sleeve.

6. An Apron

Don't rule this out! It's not cheesy!  The family member who loves to cook, do gardening outdoors, the family baker, hair stylist, nail tech, someone who loves to paint, your child's art or pottery teacher, the list can go on! Consider your favorite vendor at a craft fair you go to - one that doesn't sew, of course! It's all about the fabric!  Gone are the days where you only buy an apron for mom in the kitchen. We all want to protect our clothes from spills, stains and burns and possibly use those pockets for pens, pads and other stuff. Think outside the box!  Sew an apron!

7. A Mug Rug

We all snack and some of us care about our tables! No need to dirty a plate for a simple snack.  This doesn't even need to be washed after every use.  A simple shake of the fabric - that's it!  Sewing this is quick and easy, straight lines only- a simple rectangle with batting. If you wanted to toss in a tea bag holder/wallet for the person who carries tea packets around, well, that would be a win. That "tea bag holder" can also double as a card holder for all of those store loyalty cards stuffed in a person's wallet!  Sew the tea bag holder

8. A Toiletry Bag/A Pen Pouch/Zipper Pouch

Call it what you want but all the stuff has to go somewhere, yes?  Unless someone is walking around with a clear plastic zip lock bag shoved in their bags.  You can make them with a boxed bottom or for the gentlemen in your life, make a rectangular shape toiletry bag.  Children need a pencil/eraser pouch, teenage females should use a pouch for Shark Week and anyone who travels would appreciate the extra space for the cords and last minute additions to their luggage. Use fusible fleece or Pelon 809 interface. It's up to you and how you want the bag to be; flat or standing. Then all you have to think about is if you want to add additional items to make a gift set with  matching fabric! Sew a toiletry pouch.

9. Cord Wrapper

Super quick and easy! Toss all charging cords into a zipper pouch organized!  Match them with the toiletry pouch/zipper pouch.  Not many people realize they need this until they actually have it, then it becomes one of the "best things ever" gifts you have given out!  Use your scraps. You can't go wrong with this!

10. Placemat Set

Everyone eats. Everyone likes something! Whether it's for the gentleman who enjoys golfing or plants, the woman who loves sunflowers or beachy themed items.... Think again about protecting that table but allowing the person to have what they like! Whether it's a nice set to match the decor of the table, or to swap out a favorite set during a particular season or holiday, a new placemat set is useful. How cool would that child in your life enjoy their own placemat, instead of the set their mom and dad chose for them!  You could possibly be the coolest person at the gathering after that!  Not many people consider individual placemats as a gift option because we have the idea of photo/Instagram ready picture stuck in our heads. Do it!  I bet that little person would be excited to set the table for dinner and plop down at their seat! Sew a placemat set.

No matter what you choose to sew, make it personal. Make it fun. Make it according to what your special person would enjoy. Don't just sew to sew and hand them anything. There's just too much fabric in a store for you not to be creative about your choices.  I hope this helps you make someone smile when they unwrap a gift.  It's the magic of the season.

Get to sewing.
